AI is making parts of fiction production faster and more accessible. Someone who has always had a story in their head but struggled with English or the mechanics of writing can now actually get it onto the page.

That\u2019s a good thing.

It also means there will be more fiction. More great stories and mediocre ones, but also more weird stories and more forgettable ones. Many people nowadays call all of that \u201cAI slop,\u201d but that misses the bigger picture. Every creative market has always had good work and bad work. AI is changing the volume, not the existence of quality differences.

When there are more books competing for the same finite reader attention, two things become increasingly important: standing out and earning from the readers you do reach.

There is no single model that works for every author. A finished novel might work beautifully as a one-time purchase.

A web serial is different. It creates an ongoing relationship between author and reader, with new chapters arriving over time, a model already familiar to millions of readers of serialized fiction around the world.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Recent research examining more than 14,000 self-published genre-fiction books found that the number of books with observed sales grew 19.2\u00d7 over the study period, while quarterly revenue grew 8.9\u00d7. However, revenue per selling book consequently fell across most genres. 

This means more books are competing for the same attention and money. For authors trying to figure out how to make money writing, that changes the equation.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\nA great story still needs to be a great story. But getting discovered matters. Building a readership matters. Giving readers reasons to keep coming back matters. It was a reasonable starting point. But we think there\u2019s a better model for the kind of platform we\u2019re building.

Readers will be able to purchase packages of QUIBs and use them to unlock chapters they want to keep reading. Authors earn when readers unlock their chapters.

Importantly, we will give authors a lot of control. Want to keep your entire story free? You can. Want to keep the first chapters free and monetize later chapters? You can. Want to experiment with a different approach as your readership grows? You can.

For many authors, the smartest approach may be to let readers experience enough of the story for free to decide whether they care about it enough. The author doesn\u2019t have to ask a stranger to pay before they know whether they like the story. The reader doesn\u2019t have to commit before they\u2019ve found something worth committing to.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
