I will be talking about gay hockey players in this one,\u00a0so,\u00a0<em>ahem,<\/em>\u00a0buckle up.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Mostly we are breaking down the titular enemies-to-lovers trope. It&#8217;s my favorite flavor of romance, and our spotlight story does an excellent job of portraying the complex development between two characters needed to pull it off.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>If you&#8217;ve already watched the show or read the book, by all means, read on. I\u00a0could give less than a flying puck about the hockey. Showrunner Jacob Tierney has brought these characters to life through streamlined dialogue and straight-to-the-point pacing, a tone that fits the sports atmosphere perfectly.<\/p><h3>It\u2019s seldom that book adaptations\u2013especially queer romances\u2013are handled with such care and brought to life as if they jumped straight out of the pages of the book itself<\/h3><p>Both leads (Connor Storrie as Ilya and Hudson Williams as Shane) possess the acting chops to convey the depth of Shane and Ilya\u2019s longing for each other and the undeniable weight of the attraction they feel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85d6eaf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"85d6eaf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>All romances can be boiled down to the same basic trajectory:\u00a0<strong>a story about<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>two characters who\u00a0cannot, under any circumstances, figure it out between each other until the book is 90% over.<\/strong><\/h3><p>To do this, writers have to create\u00a0<strong><em>obstacles<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0that keep their characters apart and\u00a0balance out the pull of their romance arcs. External obstacles involve a character&#8217;s position, obligations, or\u00a0societal\u00a0expectations.\u00a0<strong>Internal obstacles are a lot more mutable than external ones.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83740c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"83740c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1.The Getting-To-Know-You Sequence<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5690ce e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"c5690ce\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e4f30d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e4f30d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p dir=\"ltr\">One of the first obstacles to think about\u00a0for your romance is the characters&#8217; first impressions of each other. Whether they grew up together or they&#8217;re\u00a0meeting for the first time, how that initial\u00a0interaction as love interests goes\u00a0is crucial. That said,\u00a0it\u2019s only natural as a writer that you tend to jump the gun a bit and fast-track the whole we-are-strangers to we-are-in-love progression. We envision the end game for these characters more than the early stages, and that can lead to an unrealistic progression or an\u00a0insta-love phenomenon that can pull readers out of the story.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Reid avoids this by using external obstacles like\u00a0time and location\u00a0to naturally push Shane and Ilya together and pull them apart.<\/strong>\u00a0Their\u00a0first meeting\u00a0is cleverly set up not only\u00a0to introduce the characters to each other, but also to the audience. Shane is pure-hearted and values\u00a0sportsmanship. This is obvious when\u00a0he\u00a0introduces himself to Ilya before their game, while\u00a0Ilya responds with the cool indifference consistent with his reputation. We can tell Ilya\u00a0is\u00a0putting on a front\u00a0while Shane is doing his best to be\u00a0genuine.\u00a0<strong>This moment reveals\u00a0the root of both characters&#8217; internal obstacles.<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">With this established, Reid goes on to balance out their obstacles by building\u00a0romantic intention.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Every action signals desire<strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>Ilya\u2019s fingers lingering on Shane\u2019s a second too long when passing him a water bottle, the constant eye contact they can\u2019t help but make. This carries on\u00a0over long stretches of time. Months, sometimes even years, pass before Shane and Ilya see each other. Reid relies on this external obstacle to build\u00a0anticipation of that eventual first\u00a0meet-up, letting multiple chapters filled with &#8220;will-they-wont-they&#8221; moments pass before putting Shane and Ilya alone in a hotel room together.<\/p><p>Instead of jumping straight to fluff and banter, see how long you can\u00a0<strong><em>stretch the tension<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0between your love interests to realistically portray the stage of getting to know each other.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-beffa02 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"beffa02\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74e215c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74e215c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. The Right Environment For Tension<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c718ea1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c718ea1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p><br><\/p><p>In <em>Heated Rivalry<\/em><strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;Reid sets up Ilya and Shane as perfect foils for each other as rival hockey captains. This is her main external obstacle, the reason both characters use to justify why they can&#8217;t be together. But it also&nbsp;gives them something in common. The best external obstacles, especially for enemies-to-lovers romance, are ones that place the main characters in&nbsp;<strong>similar but opposite positions<\/strong>. This creates the unique scenario where the characters are drawn together in mutual understanding while also&nbsp;dredging&nbsp;up a ton of&nbsp;internal and external obstacles for them to navigate.&nbsp;<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>The nature of Shane and Ilya&#8217;s same sex relationship in&nbsp;<em>Heated Rivalry&nbsp;<\/em>makes this set up&nbsp;<em>especially<\/em>&nbsp;tricky for them. Hockey is a hypermasculine sport with built in anti-queer sentiment, and we as an audience are shown&nbsp;this right away. Being caught dating a rival would&nbsp;end anyone&#8217;s&nbsp;career, but dating a man would destroy Shane and Ilya&#8217;s&nbsp;reputations in the sport they&#8217;ve given their life to. The stakes&nbsp;are through the roof.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because they are rivals, neither Shane nor Ilya is allowed to be who they truly are.&nbsp;<strong>This is often why enemies-to-lovers is such an appealing trope: it comes with resistance built in, and there\u2019s something wildly satisfying about watching two people try their hardest not to fall for each other.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d4a8b7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"0d4a8b7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e9a11e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e9a11e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. The Price of Vulnerability\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95d3a54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95d3a54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p><p>While important, its crucial to understand\u00a0that external or situational obstacles are not the only way to give your romance tension.\u00a0<strong>Internal obstacles are just as important, and the best way to work in tension\u00a0between love interests is to give them conflicting desires.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>Remember a couple paragraphs ago when I was talking about Shane and Ilya&#8217;s meeting scene and how it cleverly established their internal obstacles? Well, if we take a closer look at them, we can see that they&#8217;re basically opposite character traits: Shane cares deeply about his reputation while Ilya does not. Ilya is unwilling to open up to Shane, Shane wants to form a deep emotional connection with Ilya.\u00a0<\/p><p>This makes sense with what we&#8217;ve seen:\u00a0Shane\u00a0has loving parents and a group of friends to lean on. Even if he\u00a0can\u2019t tell them the truth about his sexual orientation and often feels isolated, he has a support system. On the other hand, Ilya\u2019s family is the opposite of supportive\u2013his father constantly berates him, while his brother calls him only when he needs money. Ilya\u2019s beyond isolated\u2013he\u2019s completely alone.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>What Reid is doing here is giving characters a reason to need one another.\u00a0<\/strong>These opposing desires and character traits\u00a0don&#8217;t work as obstacles until we put Shane and Ilya together. Only then does a clear narrative emerge for how these two characters are going to help each other. But this process shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0be easy.<\/p><p>A\u00a0YouTube video called \u201cThe price of intimacy is conflict\u201d by Francesca Psychology puts it quite succinctly: The price of intimacy means being vulnerable, and this should cause\u00a0<strong>conflict<\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">When your characters expose their soft sides, like Shane, they are more easily hurt. They may build up barriers as a result.\u00a0Or perhaps, like Ilya, your character refuses to show their softness, instead rejecting the love they so obviously feel, and this gets slowly broken down over the course of the story. Characters need to affect one another, and this is especially true if they are love interests.\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p><p>When writing romance,\u00a0<strong>a character&#8217;s internal obstacle will be something that they rely on their love interest to help them resolve.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-221eef1 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"221eef1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e84887 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e84887\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Honestly, there is so\u00a0much more that goes into writing romance than the above pointers.
