If anyone is talented enough to rework\u00a0the titular mad scientist\u00a0tale, it\u2019s definitely this guy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d34970d e-con e-atomic-element e-div-block-base e-d34970d-a599358\" data-id=\"d34970d\" data-element_type=\"e-div-block\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-interaction-id=\"d34970d\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-id=\"d34970d\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54446d7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"54446d7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 \n\t\tdata-interaction-id=\"ea3be69\" \n\t\tclass=\"e-heading-base\" \n\t\t \n\t\tdata-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"ea3be69\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\t\tMost modern interpretations of Mary Shelley\u2019s famous novel recognize <em>Frankenstein<\/em> as <strong><em>foundational to the science fiction and horror genres.<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aef211d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aef211d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are many layers to the text. It\u2019s littered with evidence of Shelley\u2019s worldview as an unusually\u00a0educated woman, clear nods to the legacy of her mother Mary Wollstonecraft, a prominent feminist and radical thinker. It's called&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201csympathy for the monster\u201d.<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93dc42d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"93dc42d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Villains and\u00a0antagonists with complicated development arcs have become increasingly trendy in modern storytelling. &#8220;Because they\u2019re evil&#8221; is generally a\u00a0less convincing framework justify a character&#8217;s actions. Audiences often want complicated, grey-tinged tales, true reflections of the world around us. Or, at the very least, I\u00a0want that for the specific story I am going for at the moment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 \n\t\tdata-interaction-id=\"18004c5\" \n\t\tclass=\"e-heading-base\" \n\t\t \n\t\tdata-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"18004c5\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\t\t<strong><em>1. Setting<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4906f54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4906f54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One unique marker of a Del Toro film is his consistent ability to build atmosphere. Frankenstein\u2019s setting is full of desolate cliffside moors and the dripping underbellies of castles, hammering home themes of hostility\u00a0and isolation. The macabre maximalism of Victor\u2019s study is a clear reflection of his obsession with overcoming death.<\/p><p>Given that movies are primarily visual media, it makes sense Del Toro is naturally inclined to do this, but I\u2019d argue it\u2019s just as important in writing.\u00a0<strong>As a writer, it is your job to build a world unique to the story you are trying to tell.\u00a0<\/strong>Setting should be treated as seriously as character\u2013because, in a way, it\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0character. Think about Derry in Stephen King\u2019s\u00a0<em>It<\/em>\u00a0or Area X in\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>. We buy into these set pieces because they are integral to the story, and possess elements necessary to tell that story.<\/p><p>In<em>\u00a0Frankenstein<\/em>, the tower itself becomes an antagonist after Victor decides to blow it up in an effort to kill the Creature, wounding himself\u00a0grievously\u00a0in the process. The looming face of Medusa in the\u00a0tower\u00a0lab constantly reminds the audience of the future in store: a misunderstood monster, and the folly of man.\u00a0<strong>Your setting provides an opportunity to foreshadow, hint at larger themes, and create obstacles for your characters to navigate<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-848c059 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"848c059\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 \n\t\tdata-interaction-id=\"40bb742\" \n\t\tclass=\"e-heading-base\" \n\t\t \n\t\tdata-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"40bb742\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\t\t<strong><em>2. Situational motivation and backstory<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e97261e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e97261e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Speaking of obstacles, the situations that Del Toro places both his monsters in inform their actions throughout the story.<\/strong>\u00a0The unfortunate death of Victor\u2019s mother and the cruelty of his father provide sympathetic reasons as to why he pursues the reanimation of corpses so ardently.<\/p><p>However, Del Toro also doesn\u2019t shy away from how thoroughly Victor is corrupted by his ambitions: giving us scenes where he examines criminals awaiting the noose as corpses rather than living men or pillages battlefields without an ounce of respect for the dead. In this sense, he is both relatable and unforgivable\u2013we hate his behavior, but sympathize with his reasoning because we understand the suffering he\u2019s been through. In this framework, Victor truly is the villain of\u00a0<em>Frankenstein<\/em>, but he is far from a flat one.\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Leaning as far as possible into the darker sides of a character makes them more interesting, but\u00a0<strong>the situational motivation behind their actions should be roughly\u00a0proportional to the actions themselves<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59c5252 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"59c5252\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 \n\t\tdata-interaction-id=\"f80808f\" \n\t\tclass=\"e-heading-base\" \n\t\t \n\t\tdata-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"f80808f\"\n\t>\n\t\n\t\t\t<strong><em>3.Tragedy<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adeeb9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"adeeb9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Both Victor and the Creature\u2019s story are ultimately framed around the tragedy, but this is more true for the latter. The Creature is only alive because he\u2019s an experiment\u2013it\u2019s clear that Victor has little regard for him beyond this capacity, sometimes even to the detriment of the film, as it becomes increasingly obvious that Victor could solve his issues simply by righting the wrongs with his creation. The Creature\u2019s only frame of self-worth is through his creator, who abuses him as Victor was once abused.<\/p><p>We are constantly provided with evidence to the Creature\u2019s innate kindness, especially when he interacts with symbols of purity, such as Elizabeth and the deer in the forest. While the romance between Elizabeth and the Creature is not given the time needed to be gracefully developed in De Toro\u2019s film, there is clear value in setting up that potential. Del Toro is giving us the foil which sees beyond the unnaturalness of the monster and recognizes\u00a0the potential for intelligence and humanity\u00a0in the Creature where Victor cannot.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>This is foundational for creating that sense of tragedy for anti-hero characters.<\/strong>\u00a0We know that if the Creature was given a chance to be with Elizabeth, his obsession with Victor would not come to fruition. Each encounter further develops different aspects of his character\u2014he gains wisdom from the old man, gentleness from Elizabeth, and violence from the hunters. Forced into insolation by everyone, including his creator, the Creature has little choice but to be\u00a0cruel, making his eventual turn\u00a0towards violence highly sympathetic to an audience.<strong>\u00a0The more evidence of a character\u2019s potential good is provided, the more we can excuse their fall into villainy<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89319c5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"89319c5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-beb4fa2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"beb4fa2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>These three points are by no means the end-all-be-all of the\u00a0<strong><em>\u201csympathy for the monster\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0trope.<\/h3><p>The reason why\u00a0<em>Frankenstein<\/em>\u00a0is so relevant more than 200 years after it was originally published is because\u00a0it was\u00a0so deliberate with its parallels, philosophies, and themes.There are endless talking points, so many that a complete dissection of\u00a0<em>Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>(pun most definitely intended) could easily morph into an entire lecture series.\u00a0<\/p><p>Still, hopefully,\u00a0this piece captured enough of it to pull back the curtains on Del Toro\u2019s adaptation and the character arcs within.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Quibble\u2019s brand new newsletter:The Editor\u2019s Desk My name is Emerson, and I am a writer and editor on Quibble\u2019s editorial team.
