For those of you who have just discovered our blog through this piece, let's bring you back to where it all began. In the warm embrace of last summer, a seed of an idea was planted, giving birth to what we now know as Quibble. For around three months, our team delved deeply into the question: What is the purpose of Quibble? Why does the world need it? The only thing we knew for sure is that it was going to be something about books. This was a period of reflection, learning, and understanding our vision. We realized that if we were to build something truly relevant and valuable, we needed to start with a clear and meaningful purpose.
Traditional Art in the AI Era
We discovered the art world standing at a crossroads, shaken by the rise of AI art. Initially, with our limited understanding of the art world, we envisioned creating a space where both traditional and AI art could co-exist, learning from one another. However, as we delved deeper, our perspective evolved. The emergence of AI has been both fascinating and controversial, dividing opinions and sparking debates about creativity, originality, and the future of traditional art. As powerful as AI art is in reshaping our understanding of creativity and its possibilities, it also raised concerns about the diminishing space for traditional artists, especially smaller artists who depend on commissions for their livelihood.
Listening to our deeper voices, we heard a clear call. This was not a moment for co-existence, but a decisive point where a profound impact was needed for those who need it most. Our focus shifted to unequivocally support traditional artistry, recognizing that the stories and struggles of these artists must be heard and valued. In this shift, Quibble found its true purpose – to be a sanctuary and a stage for traditional artists, a place where their art isn't overshadowed but instead celebrated and integrated into the rich world of books.
Redefining Artistic Collaboration
It was amidst this backdrop that we realized the time was ripe to make a significant impact. We asked ourselves: how can we rekindle appreciation for traditional artistry? This cannot be yet another art gallery. We had to envision something more profound, creative, adventurous, and collaborative, with a stronger sense of purpose. And just like that, our mission became clear: to create a platform that not only celebrates and actively promotes the work of traditional artists, but gives each piece of art a real connection so that the artwork doesn't exist in a vacuum - and that connection is a book. Just think of all the magical fantasy and science-fiction worlds that could be brought to life through this synergy of text and traditional art.
Building with the Community
The world is brimming with readers and countless remarkable books of all genres, each a potential canvas for artistic inspiration. We pondered, what if readers had the choice to enrich their experience with more illustrations? To peel back layers of art before, during, or after diving into the narrative depths of a book. We all love options. Isn't that why we go to the movies after reading a great book? What if we created a new form of entertainment, based on existing, beautifully crafted stories?
Quibble is our exploration into this uncharted territory. We're venturing into a world where every book holds the potential for visual storytelling, where illustrations become a core aspect of the reading experience. It's an ambitious endeavor, one whose value we're still exploring, particularly as we navigate the intricate web of intellectual property concerns. We're not just addressing these challenges; we're invigorated by the prospect of devising innovative solutions that satisfy and benefit all involved parties. But the enthusiasm and feedback from our early adopters tell us one thing – there is a community eager to embark on this journey of discovery with us. Their support and excitement give us the wings to soar.
In the face of launching a consumer-facing product, there are typically two paths: develop in secrecy and unveil a polished product, or open the gates early, welcoming community input on a nascent creation. We chose the latter, driven by the belief that traditional artists deserve a new way to be heard, beyond the confines of legal battles against AI art giants. Quibble is that alternative. We're listening, and we're building this for you.
